. at least two reported tornadoes touched down in the houston area. one man was killed when a toppled tree flattened his pickup truck. by mid-afternoon, nearly 70,000 people in the houston area were without power. meteorologist david bernard says it's only going to get worse. >> this is a wide-ranging storm, as far as impacts go. there's a tornado threat in the south all the way into the southeast for tomorrow. north of that, arkansas into tennessee, indiana, parts of missouri and even into ohio, the threat will be for blizzard conditions developing later tonight and tomorrow. >> reporter: and all that bad weather is tracking east, with the bulk of it hitting the northeast by wednesday night. nm? >> thanks, michelle. police are learning more about what led to the ambush of four firemen yesterday in webster, ebstyork. there is a memorial outside the firehouse to michael chip rene and thomas kaczowka. they were shot and killed by the gunman william spengler, who later killed himself. he left a rambling note in which he said he wanted to see how much of the neighborhood he could burn down and

.b. bush remains at houston's methodist hospital where he spent christmas with first lady barbara bush as well as his sons. doctors are saying the former president suffered setbacks, that's why sthey had not releasd him before are christmas. he had a bronchitis-type cough. doctors say since then, he's become weak and developed a fever. for more on that massive storm, we turn to nbc's dylan dreyer. good morning, dylan. a shock for so many. >> it's a shock because there's so many different aspects. we were talking about a foot of snow in portions of arkansas, but we're also getting reports of 19 tornadoes down through mississippi and to louisiana. so there are a lot of facets to this storm and now it's spreading east and that threat of severe weather will now go into georgia and into the carolinas. and you can see where that snow is falling. we do have heavier snow right now through northern arkansas and moving into southeastern missouri and also into southern illinois as well. so here is this area of low pressure and it is slowly going to move up to the northeast. so eventually, washing

. in houston county there's debris strewn everywhere and some buildings are basically unrecognizable. in harris county, authorities say one person was killed when a tree fell on him. utility companies report that thousands of people there are without power. >>> on a stormy day here in the bay area as well, i've been tracking a line of heavy rain here into the east bay. it's been moving quickly from the west to the east. right now, the heaviest rain for the inland spots also in to the san ramon valley as well as the south bay been but we're seeing some improvement here for the peninsula and into the north bay as things begin to quiet down. there are some more showers offshore. a closer look at the east bay here shows that mainly light rain although it is a little bit heavier to the east of antioch in towards brentwood, danville also getting heavier rain and things have been picking up here in the south bay, especially between fremont and milpitas. a closer look shows that we do have some of the yellow and orange colors showing up and snow in the sierra. that's the blue here. that snow is making
